A practical technical guide for epoxy and resin flooring installation decisions

By Premier Flooring Systems Ghana

Moisture testing is only useful when the results lead to a clear installation decision. Concrete that exceeds the allowable moisture limits for a specified resin system can increase the risk of blistering, delamination, osmotic pressure and premature flooring failure. The correct approach is therefore to compare test results with the flooring manufacturer’s published requirements and, where necessary, implement an approved mitigation strategy.

Why Moisture Acceptance Criteria Matter

Acceptance criteria provide objective limits for deciding whether a concrete substrate is suitable for resin flooring. These limits are not universal: they vary with the flooring system, primer technology and service environment. Installation decisions should therefore be based on the current technical data sheet for the selected system rather than assumptions about slab age or apparent dryness.

1. Relative Humidity: ASTM F2170

Many standard epoxy systems specify maximum internal relative humidity limits in the approximate range of 75–80% RH, while specialised moisture-tolerant primers and systems may permit higher values. The governing limit should always be the resin flooring manufacturer’s current published requirement.

2. Moisture Vapour Emission Rate: ASTM F1869

Where moisture vapour emission rate (MVER) testing is specified, the measured result should be compared directly with the coating manufacturer’s published limit. Results above the permitted threshold normally require additional drying time or an approved moisture mitigation system before the flooring installation proceeds.

3. Check Environmental Conditions Before Installation

Moisture acceptance is not limited to the slab test result. Before installation, verify substrate temperature, ambient temperature, relative humidity and dew point. The concrete surface temperature should remain sufficiently above the dew point to minimise the risk of condensation during application.

4. What to Do When Moisture Is Too High

Where moisture exceeds acceptable limits, appropriate responses may include epoxy damp-proof membranes, moisture mitigation primers, drainage improvements, repair of leaks, or additional drying time where practical. The correct solution depends on the moisture source, measured RH or MVER values, the presence of a vapour barrier, the service environment and the manufacturer’s recommendations.

5. Verification and Documentation

After mitigation measures are completed, repeat moisture testing to verify that the substrate satisfies the specified installation requirements. Quality records should retain the original test results, the mitigation measures undertaken, repeat test results, approval records and supporting photographs.

A Simple Decision Framework

Do not proceed with installation until the applicable acceptance criteria have been satisfied, or the selected moisture mitigation system has been approved by the flooring manufacturer and project stakeholders.

Assessment Recommended Action Typical Outcome
Within manufacturer limits Proceed with installation Low moisture-related risk
Slightly above limits Investigate or use approved mitigation Risk reduced if properly treated
Well above limits Delay installation and mitigate moisture Avoid premature flooring failure

Premier Flooring Systems Ghana Best Practice

Never rely on assumptions or slab age. Base installation decisions on documented moisture test results, recognised standards and the resin system manufacturer’s published requirements.

Key Takeaway

Acceptance criteria turn moisture test data into an installation decision. Where limits are exceeded, effective mitigation and repeat testing are essential before resin flooring is installed. This disciplined approach reduces avoidable moisture-related failures and strengthens project quality assurance.
